GUWAHATI: Naharlagun sub-division authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have asked eateries to remove the word “beef” from signboards, saying the decision was taken to uphold the “secular spirit” of the Constitution.

An order to this effect was issued officially by the executive magistrate of Naharlagun, Tamo Dada, on July 13 under Section 144 of CrPC. The order stated that if any eatery fails to comply with the administration’s order, a fine of Rs 2,000 will be slapped and cancellation of such trading license would be initiated. “Whereas, District Administration of ICR (Itanagar Capital Region) believes in the secular spirit of our Indian Constitution but such open display of word beef on the signboards of such Hotels and Restaurants may hurt the sentiments of some sections of the community and may create animosity between different groups of community,” read the order.

It said so as to maintain peace in the community and to continue the “spirit of secularism and brotherhood” within the community, all hotels and restaurants which have written word “BEEF” on their signboards have been asked to remove such a word by July 18.
