SHILLONG: Outgoing
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma is all set to be sworn in on Tuesday. He was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) here on Friday.
Mukul was elected CLP leader after his name was proposed by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang, who, ironically, had to relinquish the CM's office in Sangma's favour following dissent in the Congress last year.
Sangma's name was "seconded" by veteran Congress leader and former CM Salseng C Marak.
Immediately after being elected CLP leader, Mukul, along with AICC observers drove in to Raj Bhawan to meet Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary and stake claim to form the new government. "We shall provide stability," a beaming Mukul, who led the Congress to a spectacular near-absolute victory in the just concluded assembly elections, told reporters.
The Congress, which almost swept the elections with 29 out of the 60 seats it contested, is going to form government with the support of NCP, which won two, besides eight Independent legislators.
