Guwahati: The mortal remains of Guwahati mountaineer Deepshikha Hazarika, who was among those killed in the Uttarakhand avalanche, arrived in the city on Sunday.
She was part of the 41-member team that was hit by the avalanche near Draupadi ka Danda-II peak in Uttarkashi district on October 3. Her body was retrieved three days later.
Sources said Deepshikha’s father Golap and elder brother Deepjyoti had flown to Uttarakhand on Wednesday. They departed from Delhi airport on Sunday and reached the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport in Guwahati late in the night.
Kamrup (Metro) district deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha told TOI that the district administration has given the additional deputy commissioner, Bikram Chetry, and the Chandrapur revenue circle officer, Dipankar Barman, the task of receiving the mortal remains of the climber and of facilitating the transportation to her residence at Chandrapur in the city. Sources said the last rites of Deepshikha will be performed on Monday.
Satyen Sarma, the chief advisor of the Assam mountaineering association, said, “It is very painful that we have lost a bright mountaineer. We had lost mountaineer Rohini Kumar Bhuyan on mount Kedar Dome peak at over 22,000 feet altitude in 1979.”
