Moreh IDPs urge govt to defer census & delimitation exercise
Imphal: The Committee on Protection of Meetei Victims (COPMeV), Moreh, has expressed strong disapproval against the proposed census and delimitation in Manipur amid the prevailing unrest situation and crisis in the state.
The committee, which represents the internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Moreh, on Wednesday noted that many IDPs are currently residing in relief camps due to the conflict in the state and questioned how these displaced individuals would be included in census surveys.
In a statement, the committee highlighted concerns that large numbers of illegal immigrants have reportedly entered Manipur from neighbouring countries, impacting the state’s demographic structure. It also pointed to inconsistencies observed in the 2001 census, particularly the unusual population growth in hill areas.
Considering all these, it demanded the census operations should not be undertaken until an authentic population database of Manipur is established through the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
COPMeV further warned that illegal settlements, deforestation, and poppy cultivation linked to such migration have not only disturbed the ecological balance but also altered the socio-political landscape of the state.
In light of these issues, it urged both the state and central govts to defer the census and delimitation process in the state.
It also said it will wholeheartedly support and take part in protests organised by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation against the holding of census before addressing the issues of illegal immigrants and IDPs.
