Aizawl: Mizoram governor Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh attended the 80th Foundation Day celebration of the department of library and information science, University of Delhi, as chief guest on Tuesday. The event was held at the Convention Hall in the Vice Regal Lodge on the Delhi University campus.
Addressing the gathering, Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh emphasised the enduring value of public libraries and books, while expressing concern over the declining importance of public libraries in contemporary society.
He pointed to European countries for consistently prioritising strong public library systems and urged renewed focus on library culture in India. “Now is the time to revive and improve them,” he said.
The governor said while the role of libraries in educational institutions is evolving, they remain crucial for building a strong foundation for national development.
He also cited Nalanda University as an example of India’s historic academic excellence.
The governor congratulated the department on completing 80 years and wished it continued success.
