Mizoram Cong youth wing seeks probe into ‘illegal’ fertiliser import
Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) on Tuesday alleged that a large quantity of fertilisers has been imported into Mizoram via the new railway service and urged the state govt led by Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) to halt what it described as the “illegal” import of fertilisers intended for smuggling into Myanmar. In a press statement, the MPYCC cited claims by the Mizoram Fertilizer Dealers’ Association (MFDA), which stated that it has not received any fertiliser allotment from the state govt since June 2024. Despite this, a large consignment of fertilisers, mainly urea, reportedly arrived at the Sairang railway station recently. The MPYCC alleged that while farmers in Mizoram have been unable to access fertilisers for over a year, at least 10,000 bags of urea arrived at Sairang station without challans (invoices) or official allotment from the state agriculture department. These bags were allegedly being transported to Zorinpui (Zochachhuah), near the Myanmar border in Lawngtlai district. The Congress youth wing demanded an immediate investigation into the allegations raised by MFDA leaders and called on chief minister Lalduhoma and agriculture & farmers’ welfare minister P C Vanlalruata to publicly clarify the matter.“Fertiliser a controlled item and prohibited from being exported to foreign countries without the prior approval of the central govt,” the press release stated. It added that previously allotted urea bags were marked BVFCL (green) and IFFCO (yellow), whereas the newly arrived bags were plain white with no markings.Terming the ‘illegal’ import of fertilisers as a serious matter, the MPYCC vowed to investigate it thoroughly to find out the truth.
