Guwahati: A 35-year-old man, haling from Assam’s Tezpur, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people on Sunday in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district after being mistaken for a thief, Sonapur police said,
reports Tathagata Bhattacharjee.
The incident occurred at a private resort in Guwahati’s Sonapur area.
According to police, the resort’s employees grew suspicious of the presence of one Farzul Alam, who had gone there seeking shelter. Based on his appearance, they allegedly mistook him for a thief.
Sonapur police station officer-in-charge Manuj Boruah said the employees confronted Alam and began assaulting him. The situation quickly escalated as others joined in, and Alam was severely beaten despite repeatedly trying to explain himself. Following the assault, the resort employees informed the police and directed them to Alam, who was found unconscious. Boruah said seven persons involved in the attack have been arrested.
They have been identified as Mustafizur Haque of Sipajhar, Chitra Das of Mayong, Ram Sonar of Tinsukia, Sushil Nath of Sivasagar, Stayojit Haloi of Tihu, Ranjit Brahma of Baksa, and Manab Roy of Mayong, a director of the resort.
“A case has been registered under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with murder committed by a mob,” Boruah said. The accused were produced before a local court on Sunday, and police have sought their remand for further investigation.
Alam was initially taken to Sonapur Hospital after the attack and later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Despite efforts by doctors to stabilise him, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police said they are examining CCTV footage from the resort, recording witness statements and collecting other evidence to ascertain the full sequence of events leading to the incident.
