Meghalaya’s border village kids get transport for school access
Shillong: Students from Kyrweng village will now have safer and more reliable access to education, thanks to a dedicated transport vehicle flagged off by Meghalaya education minister and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui. The vehicle, which will ferry students to Muktapur near the India-Bangladesh border, is expected to ease travel difficulties — particularly during the monsoon season — ensuring that children can attend school regularly without disruption.
According to the education department, “The initiative seeks to ensure that students have safe, secure, and regular access to education, particularly during the monsoon season when travel becomes difficult.”
Addressing the gathering, Rymbui on Saturday urged villagers not to misuse the vehicle and stressed that it must serve its intended purpose. He also appealed to the village durbar (traditional administrative body) to take full responsibility for the vehicle’s care and maintenance to ensure long-term benefits for students.
On the occasion, the minister distributed work orders worth Rs 5 lakh for the construction of additional classrooms at Kyrweng LP School. Another Rs 1 lakh was sanctioned for building a school toilet, underscoring the importance of sanitation and public health. Extending developmental support to Sankhat village, Rymbui handed over work orders worth Rs 5 lakh for internal road construction and sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for a boundary wall at RC Sankhat.
Highlighting that “cleanliness is vital for development,” Rymbui expressed hope that the initiative would raise awareness among people.
