Raja Raghuvanshi murder: Meghalaya cops solve case in 7 days, prove efficiency, win praise from home minister
GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Police ranks among the best forces in the country, state home minister Prestone Tynsong said, defending the SIT's breakthrough in just seven days. His statement comes amid sharp criticism from the Indore couple's families, who labelled the state police as inefficient and demanded a CBI investigation.
Tynsong, also the deputy CM, said it was proved over the decades that the state police force is one of the best in the country. "Not only that, people would remember how we handled militancy 15-20 years ago. We don't need forces from the central govt," he added.
Since the couple went missing on May 23, their families have demanded a CBI probe, stating that the "Meghalaya Police was not doing anything" in the case.
However, CM Conrad K Sangma's Monday morning post on X countered these claims, highlighting the police breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case within just seven days.
State tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh said despite the families accusing Meghalaya Police of being inefficient and unable to carry out the investigation, cracking the case by the police within just seven days is a major achievement.
"The fact is, we proved that we have a capable police force. Secondly, we continue to play host to tourists from across the country and abroad. We will also work closely with the local tourism fraternity to enhance safety measures and prevent such incidents," he added.
Tourism minister said another aspect is that there were questions raised about why there was no guide to accompany the couple. "It is now proven beyond doubt that the couple chose to go on their own. The state cannot, in fact, force people to take the help and assistance of guides," he said.
The tourist guide services remain available for those who opt for them, he added.
