Meghalaya only state to sustain 10% growth for three years post-Covid: Guv
Shillong: Meghalaya is the only State to sustain an average 10% growth for three consecutive years after the Covid pandemic, Governor CH Vijayashankar said in the State Assembly on the first day of the budget session on Monday.
“Our economy nearly doubled in just seven years, from Rs. 29,508 crore to Rs. 59,626 crore in 2025, a testament to the resilience and potential of our people,” he said in his customary address to the assembly members.
He told the House that Meghalaya stands as the second fastest growing State in India after Tamil Nadu, recording 9.66 per cent real GDP growth in 2024-25.
He said the govt envisions Meghalaya that delivers on the promise of making the “state magnificent with better service delivery, building sustainable infrastructure and opportunities for all the citizens”.
To achieve the long-term vision, he said the state has developed the Meghalaya Excellence Framework, a strategic roadmap to be among India’s top 10 States in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals by 2032.
The governor said the govt is strengthening key sectors — agriculture, roads, power, water supply, investment promotion, IT and communications, and tourism — as catalysts for economic growth. He added that targeted interventions in healthcare, education, livelihood generation, social security, and citizen-centric governance are aimed at ensuring holistic wellbeing.
The govt remains committed to attracting private investment through the PPP model to drive growth and create employment, he said.
“State initiatives have catalyzed over Rs 1,800 crore in private investment, and set a goal of mobilizing more than Rs 8,000 crore by 2032 and generating over 50,000 direct and indirect jobs,” he said.
He said the state is leveraging support for core infrastructure projects from the ministry of development of the north-eastern region through various schemes to accelerate tourism, water supply and connectivity projects.
The governor also said the Centre has commended Meghalaya’s community-driven development model for climate resilience and environmental safeguarding in the Economic Survey 2025-26.
He said Meghalaya has mapped over 55,000 springs and implemented more than 500 community-led water interventions across 8,430 hectares, aimed at enhancing long-term ecological stability.
