Meghalaya gets NEC funds for development projects
Shillong: The North Eastern Council (NEC) released a total of Rs 5,69,53,000 for several projects in Meghalaya in Jan.
The NEC-funded initiatives include the construction of school buildings at Rama Krishna Mission School, Nongjngi Nartiang, and RK Mission School, Sohra; installation of showcases, galleries, and lighting in the new building of the Williamson Sangma State Museum, Shillong; and support for a 1.5T MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital, among others.
Under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS-Roads), Rs 3.91 crore was allocated to strengthen road connectivity. “The fund covers work(s) such as the construction of a road from Shillong city to Umroi Airport under Ri-Bhoi district (length-14.279 km) in the state, contributing to improved access in remote and administrative areas, benefitting population of around 7287 and 10 villages,” an NEC release read.
In addition to state-specific projects, NEC disbursed Rs 32,59,10,251 to central, regional, and other agencies — including educational institutions and cultural organisations — during the same period. Major interventions included the construction of a boys’ hostel and school building at Khongong, Wapung Village (East Jaintia Hills), and the development of a playground at Pilangkata-Maikhuli in Ri-Bhoi district.
“The NEC has successfully completed the project for providing key identified services at Rongara in South Garo Hills District, Meghalaya, at a cost of Rs 5 crore. The project has strengthened local infrastructure, supported entrepreneurs and farmers, enhanced educational facilities, and improved connectivity, thereby positively impacting livelihoods, economic conditions, and the movement of agricultural produce in the region,” the NEC stated.
Another completed project — Integrated Farming on Piggery-cum-Fish Culture in Umling and Jirang C&RD Blocks of Ri-Bhoi district — cost Rs 2.03 crore. It has provided beneficiaries with multiple income streams through pig rearing and fish production, improving household income and financial stability. The initiative has also generated self-employment and part-time opportunities for rural youth and women, while promoting eco-friendly, sustainable farming practices.
