Manipur dy CM meets Valte kin in Churachandpur, assures justice
Churachandpur: Manipur deputy chief minister Losii Dikho flew to Churachandpur on Monday to meet the family of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who died of injuries he suffered in a mob attack on May 4, 2023. Valte was undergoing treatment in a Gurugram hospital where he passed away on Feb 21.
Conveying his condolences, Dikho met Valte’s wife and children, presented traditional shawls, and assured them of the govt’s commitment to justice. He was accompanied by Manipur home commissioner Ashok, DC Dharun Kumar S and SP Saurav Dogra.
Later, Dikho held a closed-door meeting with representatives of the Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC) at the Paite Tribe Council Hall.
On behalf of the state govt, he expressed sorrow over Valte’s death and stressed the need to expedite investigations into the circumstances that led to the MLA’s assault and deaths of many others. He said future steps towards peace and a political solution would be taken under the suspension of the operations framework, while acknowledging that major policy decisions are pending due to an incomplete cabinet.
Dikho noted the concerns raised by the ZCC and promised to place them before the appropriate govt level. Both sides agreed to continue engagement, with written communication outlining next steps. Dikho emphasised the need for a dignified burial for Valte, stating that while the ZCC has taken up the case with the family’s consent, the govt remains committed to supporting them.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dikho said, “We met the family in Delhi and extended all possible assistance to bring the body here. Today I came to offer my condolences and to assure that the govt is committed to justice. Investigations have already begun.” He added that discussions with the ZCC focused on carrying forward their demands and ensuring justice for the family and the community.
On the delay in cabinet expansion, Dikho admitted that “all kinds of problems” persist and the situation remains unfavourable, but expressed hope that expansion would happen soon. Asked about displaced persons from the May 3, 2023 conflict, he said the govt and various organisations are making “all possible efforts” to enable their return.
