Manipur CM hands over Rs 10L ex gratia to family of deceased seven-yr-old girl

Imphal: Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday handed over an ex gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh to the family members of the deceased internally displaced minor girl, who went missing on April 5 and was found allegedly raped and murdered the next day.

Singh visited the Akampat relief camp in Imphal East, expressed his heartfelt condolences and shared the grief and pain of the aggrieved family. He assured all possible help to the family members and promised speedy delivery of justice.

The seven-year-old girl’s last rites were performed on Friday. Meanwhile, the judge of the special Pocso court at Imphal East on Friday remanded the accused to judicial custody for 15 days to ensure smooth investigation of the case.

Meanwhile, taking opportunity of the CM’s visit to the relief camp, the inmates, mostly from Moreh, urged Khemchand to accelerate the resettlement process of the IDPs and sought the establishment of an IRB battalion at Moreh for the security of the people.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister paid tribute to Maharaj Narasingh on his 176th death anniversary at Kangla in Imphal. Khemchand also offered tarpan at Nungjeng Pukhri, Kangla, and paid obeisance to the Shree Shree Govindajee Jalakeli Pala led by Maharajkumari Hemamanjuri.

Addressing the gathering, Khemchand recalled Maharaj Narasingh’s visit to Cachar during the ‘Seven Years Devastation’ and how he united the Manipuri people residing in different parts of the region through his diplomatic efforts. With the help of British, the Manipur Levy was formed, which later made it possible to drive away the Burmese, thereby regaining the freedom to re-establish an independent Manipur, he added.

The observance was marked by a guard of honour, gun salute, and the sounding of the last post by a contingent of the 1st Manipur Rifles.

Later in the afternoon, the chief minister paid tributes to BSF constable Mithun Mandal, who was martyred during a firing between armed groups in Ukhrul district on Friday, during a wreath laying held at the Imphal airport. Top officials, including DGP Manipur and security advisor, were also present on the occasion.
