Shillong: Meghalaya CM
Conrad K Sangma on Saturday vowed strict action after ACHIK member Dilseng M Sangma was fatally assaulted by unidentified persons at Goalgoan in West Garo Hills around 2pm on Friday, later succumbing to his injuries. Police have since arrested three persons in connection with the attack, with the CM assuring that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
The CM said strict action against all those involved in the killing of a member of the A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a Garo civil society organisation, in Goalgoan under Rajabala police station under West Garo Hills district.
The victim was rushed to Bhaitbari community health centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being shifted.
Expressing grief, the CM said, “Deeply distressed by the tragic loss of a young life and the serious injury sustained by another in the incident at Rajabala in West Garo Hills district. I strongly condemn this heinous act and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.” He added that police raids on Friday night led to the arrest of three persons, with efforts continuing to nab others.
Sangma added that the West Garo Hills DC is engaging with civil society organisations to constitute a peace panel to address concerns through dialogue. He appealed to the people of Garo Hills to remain calm, uphold communal harmony, and resist misinformation or rumours that could disturb peace and unity.
The incident occurred after ACHIK members visited Wadagokgre Aking, where alleged illegal stone quarries were operating within a protected area under the Archaeological Survey of India. While returning, they were attacked by miscreants armed with weapons.
Police raids included searches at the residence of a quarry owner suspected to be linked to the attack, though he remains absconding.
Meanwhile, Rajabala MLA Mizanur Kazi has appealed for calm. A peace meeting convened by West Garo Hills DC Vibhor Aggarwal at Tura circuit house brought together officials, community leaders, church and mosque representatives, the central puja committee, youth groups, and NGOs.
The gathering unanimously called for unity and cooperation to maintain law and order in the plain belts of West Garo Hills.
Additional police forces have been deployed across the district, with security tightened in sensitive areas.
