Man gets life in jail for murdering wife in Cachar

Silchar: Cachar district and session judge's court sentenced a 32-year-old man to life imprisonment on Friday for murdering his wife over a domestic dispute last year.The incident occurred on July 22, 2024, when the convict, Anwar Hossain Barbhuiya, killed his wife, Alifa Begum Barbhuiya (20), mother of two children, with a sharp weapon at their residence in the Shildubi area, Sonai, Cachar district.According to the police, Begum had visited her ailing father a day before the incident and spent the night there. "The following morning, Anwar called her home. Upon Alifa's return with their two children, an argument ensued between the couple, escalating into a horrific confrontation. Hossain repeatedly struck his wife in the neck with a hatchet in the presence of their children. Severely injured, Alifa stumbled and fell outside of their house, where the convict continued to attack her," a police officer said, adding that when neighbours attempted to intervene, Anwar lunged at them with the weapon.Alifa succumbed to her injuries at the spot due to excessive bleeding, the officer said.Upon information, the police arrived at the crime spot. The district magistrate and Sonai block development officer also inspected the scene and recovered various pieces of evidence, including the weapon used in the murder. The body had been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.Subsequently, fearing the wrath of the local populace, Hossain fled but later surrendered at the police station and confessed to the crime. The victim's family filed a case against Hossain at Sonai police station.
