Silchar: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Cachar police seized contraband worth around Rs 7 crore and arrested two persons near Banskandi in the district, officials said on Tuesday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs about narcotics movement, the joint team launched a late-night operation on Monday and intercepted suspected carriers in the Banskandi area. A thorough search led to the recovery of a large quantity of drugs, after which the duo was taken into custody on the spot.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Imam Uddin Laskar (29) of Rajghat and Bakul Hussain Laskar (28) of Channighat in the Dholai area of Cachar district.
Security personnel also seized an SUV used for transporting the contraband, along with two mobile phones from their possession.
Officials said the accused have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings. “Investigation is underway to trace the larger network behind the trafficking,” a source said, adding that coordinated efforts between Assam Rifles and district police have been intensified to curb drug smuggling in the region.
