AIZAWL: Polling for the first Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) in south
Mizoram's Lunglei town ended peacefully with nearly 75% of the voters exercising their franchise at 44 polling stations on Wednesday, said civic poll officials.
The polling began at 7 am and continued till 4 pm. As many as 40,548 electorates, including 20,979 women, voted for 42 candidates in 11 wards.
Among the elderly voters, 95-year-old Rev. Dr. C.L. Rema, a retired pastor of the Baptist Church of Mizoram, cast his vote at ward No. 2.
The LMC is the second municipal body after the Aizawl Municipal Council, which has been upgraded to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
The ruling
Mizo National Front,
Congress and Zoram People's Movement contested in all the 11 wards, while
BJP fielded its candidates in nine wards. However, there were no Independent candidates in the fray. Electronic voting machine was used in the civic polls.
