US government shutdown: What it is, impact on visa, scientific research and more
If Congress fails to extend funding past November 17, government services in the US would be disrupted and federal workers would be told not to work, except for essential workers. Pay for all federal employees could be disrupted during a shutdown, but they would receive retroactive pay once operations resume. Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to enact appropriations bills, and previous shutdowns have affected scientific research and visa services. The 2019 shutdown also impacted the rollout of 5G technology in the US.
