GUWAHATI: Exit poll results published on Monday after the end of elections in all states have predicted that BJP will either form the next government in Manipur on its own or the results could throw up a hung assembly with BJP as the single largest party, which means it might have to stitch another post-poll alliance like in 2017 to retain power.

The actual results will be out on March 10 when the counting of votes takes place. NEDA chairman and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is known for his acumen to predict election results, had said on January 1 that this time that BJP would form the government in Manipur on its own. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh is also confident of forming the goverment without help of any allies.

The exit polls predictions show that it could be the biggest defeat for Congress after it finished as the single largest party in 2017 but a quick collaboration with two parties and an Independent stitched by Sarma hoisted BJP to form its first government in the state. The exit poll predictions suggest that NPP led by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma is likely to finish with its best performance. In 2017, with four seats, NPP, the only national party from the northeast, played the role of kingmaker by partnering with BJP in the coalition government.
