GUWAHATI
: Thousands of students turned up at KC Das Commerce College and B Barooah
College to seek admission to higher secondary arts and commerce streams. In B Barooah College, the turnout in the arts stream was less than the science stream. The college received around 1,500 applications in science stream, whereas the number of applications in arts was less than 1,000.
Satyen Barman, the principal of B Barooah College, said, "Usually, in our college, there is no system of issuing cut-off marks. Those with the merit will get admission, based on the number of seats available. If a cut-off list is issued, students with less percentage will not come for admission, thinking that they won't get through."
"Many students, who secured good marks, apply here but do not turn up during admission because they get through other colleges in the city. As a result, many seats remain vacant. This is the reason why we do not issue cut-off lists. During admission, names are called out according to merit. If anyone does not turn up the next candidate in line gets the chance," he added.
The college does not discriminate between students on the basis of the boards they studied in, unlike other colleges of the city. "There is no separate cut-offs for students of other boards like CBSE or ICSE," Barman said, adding students with 54% have also got admission to the college in arts stream.
In KC Das Commerce College, the admission started with 90.33% in Seba and 89.3% in CBSE. "Later in the day, the cut-off came down to 60% for the state board and 74.1% for CBSE. Today (Saturday), students secured admission on the basis of their merit. The admission to the self-financing courses will be conducted on June 22," said Prabhat Chandra Kakati, the convenor of the admission committee.
