Hooch tragedy: Eight more arrested in Cachar

SILCHAR: Excise department officials conducted raids in three different places of Cachar district on Friday, arresting eight persons in connection with cases of production and sale of hooch. With this, the total arrests rises to 65 in connection with the recent tragedy in upper Assam, which claimed more than 150 lives.
The department has registered 77 cases and conducted 19 raids since February 22 in Cachar.Officials have seized 30,535 litres of illicit distilled liquor, 3,53,00,000 litres of fermented wash and 3,630 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor.
An official added that the excise commissioner has launched a statewide WhatsApp helpline number, 9435052381, where anyone can inform about instances of manufacture and sale of illicit liquor, in a bid to continue the drive against unsafe and unhygienic alcohol.
