GUWAHATI: At a time when those in their thirties and forties are having major health problems, an octogenarian is still lifting dumbbells and doing close to 50 push-ups every day. Meet 86-year-old Chandra Sing Deuri who, even at an age when most people are riddled with ailments, wakes up at the crack of dawn to exercise. He does not believe in gyms and uses simple tools like a parallel bar, free-hand exercises and the good old dumbbell.

He can read and hear clearly and is always in high spirits.
"There is no secret. I just think positive. I have three meals a day. Health is a treasure that needs to be cherished. I still lift dumbbells with 20kg weights and do push-ups. When I was young I used to run up the Kamakhya hill every week from Cotton College where I studied. Outside food is a strict no-no," said Deuri.
His diet is simple: rice, boiled vegetables and greens that most people don't include in their meals. Meat also forms a part of his regular diet. "I drink everything except soft drinks," he said.
Add to this regimen his sense of humour. Deuri is full of life and never misses his favourite serial on television. "I wonder how he is so full of energy. He chops wood, tends the garden and does household chores. He regularly visits his children and relatives," said his grandson, Kenny Basumatary.
