Guwahati:
Assam chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma in his address in the state assembly during voting on the uniform civil code (UCC) bill, framed it as a landmark social reform inspired by the ideological foundations of
BJP and RSS.
Sarma declared that he felt “proud” that “BJP and RSS inspire us for social revolution,” crediting these institutions for instilling in him the conviction to bring the UCC before the House.
“Had I not been a BJP CM and a swayamsevak of RSS, probably I would not have been able to bring the UCC to the assembly,” he said.
He added, “BJP and RSS teach us to embrace change and transformation in society, while harmonizing modernity with India’s 5,000‑year‑old culture and civilization. This enduring ideology stands as a symbol of inspiration for social reforms and continues to guide us.”
Responding to critics who call the UCC an agenda of BJP and RSS, Sarma said he does not feel hurt but proud.
“When someone says UCC is BJP’s or RSS’s agenda, or Modi’s or Amit Shah’s agenda, I feel proud because they inspire me to do such work,” he said, declaring, “In coming five years we will do many more such things that will bring stability and transformation in society.”
The bill was passed by a voice vote in the house heavily dominated by NDA with 102 members out of total strength of 126
State BJP president Dilip Saikia called the UCC “a historic and transformational reform.” He said that that with the passing of the UCC bill, the BJP-led government has added a new dimension to its mission of women’s empowerment and further strengthened the state’s development journey.
He said that opposition Congress has once again revealed its anti-women mind set by opposing the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” and standing against the political empowerment of women. He remarked that such opposition is unfortunate not only for women, but for society as a whole.
Saikia added that under the visionary and decisive leadership of chief minister Sarma, Assam has once again set an example in advancing constitutional values, social harmony, and progressive reforms.
