GUWAHATI: The Cine Art Society of Assam (CineASA) is organizing the 4{+t}{+h} Cine ASA Guwahati International Film Festival from February 5 to February 11 to provide movie lovers an opportunity to watch critically-acclaimed films from across the world.
"Acclaimed films from France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Canada, Norway, Germany, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey and Iran are going to be screened in the world prism category of the festival, which has been organized in association with the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation," Bitopan Borbora, festival director said here on Thursday.
The films are to be screened at Rabindra Bhawan in Guwahati, Gauhati University, IIT-Guwahati and in Lakhimpur and Dibrugarh in upper Assam. "The international films to be screened at the festival this year have won laurels in the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals. However, the organizers are not leaving out Indian films. In the Indian Mosaic category, Oscar-nominated Malayalam film, Adaminte Makan directed by Abu Salim Ahmed, Hemant Gaba's Shuttlecock Boys and Bubble Gum directed by Sanjivan Lal will be screened," Borbora said.
In the NRI endeavour section of the festival, "Goodbye My Friend" by Kalpna Singh Chitnis and Dilip Mehta's "Cooking With Stella" will be screened. Renowned actress from Assam, Seema Biswas has played a role in Dilip Mehta's film. "Assamese filmmaker, Jahnu Barua's 'Firingoti' will also be screened as he completes 30 years of filmmaking. 'Meherjaan', a film based on the liberation struggle of Bangladesh, in which Victor Banerjee and
Jaya Bachchan have also acted, will be another film that cine lovers will enjoy," Borbora said.
Noted filmmaker from West Bengal, Rituparno Ghose's romantic thriller 'Noukadubi', which is based on a story by noble laureate, Rabindra Nath Tagore, will be the curtain raiser of the festival. "Not many people in Assam are interested in watching classic films but, we hope that the festival will be able to give the viewers of the state an outlook to watch good classics," he added. Nesimul Mazid, another festival director said, a retrospective of the famous Mexican filmmaker, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, will be the special attraction of the fest this year.
