Guwahati bears the brunt as egg prices jump 50%
Guwahati: Prices of egg have surged by over 50% over the past three to four months, driven by a seasonal dip in production during winters, toll charges, and heavy reliance on supplies from other states to meet the demand in Assam.
Besides the increase in prices of all essential commodities, including vegetables, the increase in prices of eggs have burnt a hole in the pockets of the common people. Eggs are the most preferable source of protein and a daily essential for many.
The official statistics of the animal husbandry and veterinary department shows that the state requires over 560 crore eggs annually, against which the state produces only over 62 crore locally.
“The state procures eggs from Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad to meet the requirement. However, egg production in the state is increasing gradually. Although production has not met demand, it has increased compared to previous financial years. This is because educated youth are getting involved in animal husbandry through various govt schemes,” a senior research officer said on condition of anonymity.
In the city’s retail market, an egg is sold for Rs 8-10 and a plate of eggs is sold for Rs 230-250, said traders. Meanwhile, in the wholesale market, the price of eggs per carton (each carton contains 7 plates) is Rs 1550-1600.
Rashidul Kazi, a wholesale trader with a warehouse in Nalapara, Guwahati, said the market has seen an increase of Rs 40-50 per carton compared the same time last year.
“Guwahati, which has a population of around 13 lakh, requires around 20 lakh eggs per day. Around 20-25 lakh eggs reach Guwahati by road every day,” he added.
Kazi, who has been in the business for the last couple of decades, said, “The prices of locally produced eggs are usually higher for unknown reasons. The prices of these eggs should have been lower since there is very less transportation cost. ”
He added the prices increased in the last three to four months and are likely to remain the same till mid-Jan.
