JORHAT: Taraprasad Borthakur, an eminent freedom fighter of the state, passed away at his residence in Sivasagar on Thursday. He was 94.
Borthakur is survived by his wife, four daughters and three sons. His death was widely mourned in upper Assam districts. Born on October 21, 1917 at Hanchara in Sivasagar district, Borthakur joined the Mahatma Gandhi-led freedom movement in 1929 and was imprisoned several times.
He was a state level leader of
Quit India Movement in 1942. Borthakur was awarded with the Rastravir Award by the National Freedom Fighter Association in 2004. He was feted by the President in 2006 for his contribution to the nation.
