DIBRUGARH: Amid the crackdown against child marriage in Assam, Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the government to set a time period for educating the people of the state about the ills of child marriage and its legal repercussions.

Advocating the need for such a step, CPI Tinsukia district secretary Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday said, “The government must first set a time period for educating the people of the state through media campaigns, schools and college communities. There should be a three to six-month time frame, followed by a cut-off date, after which the government can apply the law.”

He added, “The government can’t arrest men and family members for child marriages that have already taken place. They can only say no more child marriage can take place after this so and so date, and all those who now indulge in this illegal practice will face the law and prison.”
