Eye on polls, govt plans to open two city flyovers in Feb
Guwahati: The Assam govt plans to open two major flyovers in Guwahati in Feb, ahead of the assembly election schedule, to avoid operational delays of at least two months during the poll process, expected to run until mid-April.
The projects include the 5.4-km Maharaja Prithu Flyover and the Y-shaped railway overbridge at Bharalumukh, where construction has been completed. The Maharaja Prithu Flyover is set to be the longest flyover in the state.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who inspected the Maharaja Prithu Flyover work post-midnight on Wednesday, said, “Around 98% work of the Maharaja Prithu flyover will be completed by the end of Feb. We will be able to open it for light vehicles. We will be able to open it completely for all vehicles on March 15; but if we wait till then, we will be very near to the assembly elections and we will have to wait till Bohag bihu is over, which is celebrated mid-April. This will cause inconvenience to the people of the city. Therefore, as a formality, the bridge will be opened on Feb 28.”
The flyover intersects the existing Anandaram Barua Setu at Chandmari, which leads to RG Baruah Road, with work continuing at the intersection point.
Sarma said the flyover’s opening would ease congestion by splitting traffic between the elevated corridor and the widened road below.
He said two additional arms are planned, with one to be extended towards Ulubari from the Guwahati Club point and another towards Rajgarh Road from the Chandmari Point, with work to begin after Bohag Bihu.
On the Bharalumukh project, Sarma said the Y-shaped railway overbridge has been completed and will be opened either on Feb 20 or Feb 22.
The overbridge is designed to eliminate level crossings near Bharalumukh Police Station, targeting congestion at Gate No 9 on RK Choudhury Road. The structure connects KR Choudhury Road tri-junction, Fatasil Chariali, Santipur and Bharalumukh Police Point, and is intended to improve access toward
