Ex-bank manager convicted in Assam loan scam

Guwahati: The special CBI court here on Monday convicted Diganta Chakraborty, former manager of UCO bank's Tezpur branch, and Biju Kalita, a trader, in a decade-old financial scam.

The court sentenced both to four years of imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them.

Between June 2000 and April 2005, Chakraborty and Kalita, a resident of Tezpur's Chandmari, fraudulently sanctioned loans of approximately Rs 399.52 lakh in violation of bank rules. On completion of investigation, a chargesheet was filed before the court here against the accused.
