Aizawl: An elderly woman was found dead inside her residence in Lunglei on Wednesday night, with police suspecting homicide.
The deceased has been identified as K Vanlalngaii (78), who was found dead at 9pm at her home in Lunglei’s Kikawn Bazar Veng. Police said preliminary findings indicate that she may have been murdered.
Lunglei superintendent of police J Lalmuankima said Vanlalngaii lived alone in the locality. Her body was discovered by her children, who live separately, after which police were informed. A forensic science team examined the body and the scene.
According to police, the woman bore injuries on her neck and on the left side of the back of her head. Investigators believe she may have been struck on the head with a blunt object, leading to her death.
Police said Vanlalngaii was living in an anganwadi building free of rent, as she was economically disadvantaged and had no one staying with her.
After the post-mortem examination, her body was taken to her son’s residence at Luangmual and was buried on Thursday afternoon.
Police further said the woman used to receive financial assistance from local residents and was believed to have kept more than Rs 20,000 with her.
Investigators suspect that she may have been killed during a robbery attempt.
A case has been registered at Lunglei Police Station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said investigations are underway and no arrests have been made so far.
