‘Doc couple’s assistant brought girl from lower Assam for adoption’

Guwahati: City-based psychiatrist Sangeeta Datta’s personal assistant, who was arrested on Saturday in connection with the child abuse case, had allegedly brought the three-year-old girl child for the doctor couple from a lower Assam district, sources said.
Utpala Bose, who was on the run since May 5, surrendered before police on Saturday.
Datta was arrested on May 6, a day after her husband, Waliul Islam, a gastrointestinal and advanced general surgeon, was arrested for abusing their adopted daughter and son, and they are currently in police custody. Their domestic help, Lakhi Rai, was also arrested on May 5, and is in judicial custody.
A team of Assam Police is trying to track down the biological parents of the child, and how and under what circumstances the child was given to the doctor couple.
Source said Bose had arranged the child for the couple with the help of two ASHA workers from a lower Assam district.
At present, the children are being looked after by the child welfare committee, Kamrup (Metro), at the child care facility. A team of expert doctors are constantly monitoring their health, said sources.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally monitoring the case and has instructed police to ensure a foolproof probe into the case and to file the charge sheet within a month or 45 days.
CWC chairperson Jitu Dutta said the children have started talking and playing with other kids at the children’s home and their health condition has also improved.
