Guwahati: The northeast continues to experience record-breaking temperatures, as September’s maximum highs reach levels unseen in the past 55 years.
On Sunday, Dibrugarh set a new record for September with a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, while in Shillong, the mercury climbed to 29.9 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day, the highest maximum temperature recorded in September in last 55 years.
In its weather bulletin on Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD, said,” Available data indicates that light to moderate rain occurred at one or two places in Assam in the last 24 hrs. There were no large change in maximum and minimum temperature over Assam during last 24 hours. Maximum temperature was markedly above normal and minimum temperature was above normal in the state during last 24 hours.”
While maximum temperature in several towns and cities in northeast continues to hover over 38 degree Celsius, the departure from normal in maximum temperature has been over five degree Celsius over most places in the region.
On Sunday, Dibrugarh recorded highest maximum temperature of 38.7 degree celsius, which is also highest maximum temperature recorded in the northeast. Departure in maximum temperature was highest in Dibrugarh (8.1 degree celsius), followed by 8 degree celsius in Pasighat and 7.5 degree celsius in North Lakhimpur.
As per IMD forecast, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in some of the northeastern states in next four days but at isolated places. On Monday, thunderstorm and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over the seven northeastern states. Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, on Monday.

According to the India Meteorological Department, heavy rains are unlikely but light showers may occur in some areas. Ahmedabad's temperature was noted at 33.4 degrees Celsius.
