Dense fog to engulf northeast till Monday

GUWAHATI: Dense fog engulfed several parts of Meghalaya and Tripura on Wednesday morning, even as the IMD said similar conditions will prevail in four northeastern states – Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura – from January 11 to 15.

IMD officials said while Barapani in Meghalaya and Agartala in Tripura recorded dense fog between 5.30am and 8.30am on Wednesday, reducing the visibility to 50 metres, shallow to moderate fog was recorded in several parts of Assam and Mizoram.

According to a release by IMD, dense fog (visibility 50-200 metres) was also witnessed in isolated places of Meghalaya and Tripura.

In Dhubri and Jorhat towns of Assam, moderate fog was recorded between 5am and 7.30am on Wednesday. Shallow fog was witnessed almost at the same time in Guwahati and Tezpur of Assam and in Lengpui of Mizoram. In the towns where moderate fog was recorded, the visibility range was 250-300 metres, whereas the locations with shallow fog witnessed visibility between 500 and 800 metres. Cold weather conditions prevailed across the NE in the last 24 hours, with maximum temperatures going down by about 5 degrees Celsius in Agartala.
