Guwahati: Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning, thunderstorms and strong winds are very likely to lash the state on Sunday and Monday, under the influence of cyclone ‘Remal’ which is predicted to form over the east central Bay of Bengal by Saturday morning.
A special bulletin issued by the Met department said the low pressure area over west central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal shifted northeastwards and was positioned as a “well-marked low pressure area over west central & adjoining south Bay of Bengal” at 8.30am on Thursday.
“It is very likely to continue to move northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensifying further into a cyclonic storm over east central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25,” it added.
The depression is expected to move almost northwards and approach near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by Sunday evening as a severe cyclonic storm, the weather bulletin said.
For Sunday, the department has predicted light to moderate rainfall at most places in Assam, with the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds (speed reaching up to 30kmph-40 kmph) and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Goalpara, Bongaigaon and Dima Hasao districts. Additionally, thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds (speed reaching up to 30kmph-40 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Darrang, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Majuli, Sibsagar, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts.
The forecast for Monday indicates the likelihood of moderate rainfall at most places in the state. Weathermen have also predicted a high probability of thunderstorms, lightning with gusty winds (speed reaching up to 40kmph-50 kmph), and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts. Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places in Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Sonitpur and Biswanath districts. Furthermore, thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds (speed reaching up to 40kmph-50 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in the remaining districts of Assam, the weather bulletin said.
The Met department has also warned of the possibility of light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mizoram, Tripura and southern Manipur on Sunday and Monday.
