CS orders probe into drain death
Guwahati: Chief secretary Ravi Kota has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a woman who fell into a manhole during heavy rain and flooding on Sunday night in Maligaon, terming preventable incidents resulting in loss of life as “unacceptable” and warning that such lapses will be dealt with firmly, reports Mukut Das.
The CS directed the PWD (Roads) to ensure complete desiltation of drains and prevent recurrence of waterlogging. He also instructed the GMC, GMDA, and water resources department to maintain round-the-clock operational readiness to address flooding in vulnerable zones.
Kota held a review meeting with all departments and directed the IMD, ASDMA, and DDMA to issue timely weather forecasts and advisories to help citizens plan movement and take precautions.
“The situation has improved in several areas, with targeted interventions continuing in affected locations. Waterlogging near Jorabat was cleared swiftly due to prior dredging towards Byrnihat — highlighting the importance of sustained desiltation,” he said.
Kota also instructed NHAI to ensure continuous deployment of concessionaires for clearing cross-drainage culverts, operating pumps, and removing silt — with primary focus on the Tetelia–Jalukbari, Excel Care–Gorchuk, Koinadhara–Tripura Road, and Jorabat–Khanapara stretches.
He further directed all agencies to remain on high alert as IMD has forecast additional rainfall in the coming days.
