Child marriage is a major problem in Assam and many other parts of the country. Despite laws and policies to curb the menace, it continues unabated in the region.
The root causes of child marriage in Assam are poverty, social and cultural norms, and a lack of education. In many rural areas of the state, families consider child marriage as a way to secure the future of their daughter. They believe that getting her married at an early age will ensure her financial security and protect her from social stigma. In some communities, child marriage is also seen as a means of establishing a social alliance between families.
The consequences of child marriage are severe and far-reaching. Child brides are forced to leave school and miss out on the opportunity to receive an education. They also face increased health risks, including complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and a higher risk of domestic violence. Furthermore, child brides are often unable to exercise their basic rights and have limited autonomy, which can have a detrimental impact on their mental and physical well-being.

The government of Assam has taken some steps to combat child marriage. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006, for example, prohibits child marriage and provides for punishment for those who perform, arrange or participate in child marriages. However, the implementation of these laws has been weak and enforcement remains a challenge.
Child marriage is a major issue in Assam that needs to be addressed immediately. It is imperative that the government and other relevant stakeholders take a multi-pronged approach to addressing this problem, including increasing access to education, changing social norms, and improving law enforcement. Child marriage robs young girls of their childhood and their right to a better future. It is our responsibility to ensure that every child in Assam has the opportunity to reach their full potential and live a life free from harm and exploitation.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has taken a strong stand against child marriage. Arresting those who violate the Child Marriage Act sends a clear message that child marriage is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
