Shillong: In a significant operation, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Meghalaya Police apprehended a couple from Silchar, Assam, in the Sohryngkham area of East Khasi Hills district on Friday. The couple, identified as Suma (42) and Sultan Mahammad Mazumder (35), were found in possession of contraband substances.
“Acting on specific intelligence inputs about drug peddlers travelling from Silchar to Shillong, ANTF personnel set up a naka at Sohryngkham, where a suspected vehicle was intercepted,” a police officer said. “During the search, officers recovered four soap boxes filled with suspected heroin, weighing 54.13 grams in total. The contraband was seized on the spot,” he added.
Following the seizure, the arrested individuals and the recovered drugs were handed over to the officer in-charge of Sohryngkham Police Outpost, East Khasi Hills District.
“An FIR has been registered by ANTF Meghalaya for further investigation and necessary legal action,” a police statement said.
In a related development, the East Khasi Hills Police organized a program under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at the Church of God Higher Secondary School in Pongkung on Oct 24.
Approximately 300 students and teachers participated, pledging to contribute to a drug-free India. The police shared this initiative on social media, encouraging community involvement in creating a healthier and safer environment.
Continuing their efforts to combat drug abuse, the East Khasi Hills Police conducted an awareness program on drugs and the MANAS (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra) 1933 under the Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan at Thliew Umtham LP School. Additionally, in collaboration with other departments, they successfully destroyed cannabis in Laitlulong village, further demonstrating their commitment to eradicating illicit activities in the region.
