College students lead cleanliness drive on Dibrugarh streets
Dibrugarh: Students and faculty of Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi (DHSK) Commerce College took to the streets on Monday for a cleanliness drive, setting an example of civic duty and environmental stewardship.
The initiative was organised as a precursor to the institution’s upcoming 62nd Annual College Week, signalling a commitment to community service alongside academic and athletic celebrations.
The drive focused on the Keshab Chandra Gogoi Road (KC Gogoi Road), a vital artery of the city named after the 9th chief minister of Assam, Keshab Chandra Gogoi — father of the former Chief Justice of India and current Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi.
Armed with brooms, shovels and biodegradable disposal bags, hundreds of participants cleared the footpaths and the road along the 1.5-km stretch extending from the college campus to the busy Thana Chariali traffic point.
The KC Gogoi Road is often referred to as Dibrugarh’s ‘educational hub’, as it houses some of the city’s most prestigious institutions, including DHSK College, DHSK Commerce College, DHSK Law College, MDKG College, MDKG Science College, Little Flower School, St Mary’s School and several others. The drive aimed to create a safer, more hygienic walking environment for the student community as hundreds of students traverse this path daily.
Faculty members joined students in picking up litter and clearing plastic waste, demonstrating that the preservation of the environment is a shared duty. Addressing the gathering at the conclusion of the drive, principal Joydeep Gogoi highlighted why educational institutions must lead such movements. “Our responsibility as an institution extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. By cleaning the very road our students walk every day, we are teaching them the value of civic sense and sustainable living. We want our 62nd College Week to begin with a message of service to the city of Dibrugarh,” he said.
