GUWAHATI: One of the most well-known personalities in the field of culture and literature, Arun Sharma, breathed his last in New Delhi on Monday at the age of 86. He was suffering for a long time.
As a writer, he has the rare distinction of winning both the Sahitya Akademi award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award besides being conferred with the Padma Shri.

In 1998, he received the Sahitya Akademi for the novel 'Ashirbadar Rong' (The Hues of Blessing).
As a radio broadcaster, too, countries like Japan and Germany honoured him in recognition of his contribution.
He has 17 published plays and five published novels to his credit. He has also edited several volumes of plays, written scripts for telefilms and radio documentaries.
His demise has left the state in deep sorrow. The irreparable loss was mourned by many as his creations had enriched the literary landscape of the region. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the death of the noted litterateur and playwright-dramatist. "Contributions of Arun Sharma towards society in the realm of drama and novel are immense," he said.
Sonowal also conveyed his condolence to the bereaved family and prayed to the almighty for the departed soul.

Sonowal directed the authorities concerned to make elaborate arrangements for getting the mortal remains of Sharma embalmed and airlifted to Guwahati. He also asked chief secretary Vinod Kumar Pipersenia to make arrangements for performing Sharma's last rites with full state honours on Tuesday.
Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi also condoled the death of the noted literary figure.
Among others, the Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) expressed their grief.
