Assam CM opens Mother & Child Hospital on GMCH campus

Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday inaugurated the Mother and Child Hospital within the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) campus, marking a major healthcare expansion aimed at strengthening maternal and neonatal services across the state.

The new facility has modern infrastructure and specialised care services, including dedicated maternity and neonatal care and a 152-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The hospital has a total capacity of 832 beds.


Sarma also said he laid the foundation stone of a new GMCH building worth Rs 3,300 crore.

Taking to X, Sarma said, “A giant leap in healthcare, Today marks an important milestone in Assam’s healthcare sector as I laid the foundation stone of New GMCH building worth Rs 3,300 crore. I also inaugurated the 832-bed Mother and Child Hospital, offering specialised care and reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). This is truly a historic moment for us. Established in 1960, GMCH is set to undergo a complete overhaul, adding new facilities and expanding healthcare reach in Assam’s premier medical college. This will make it one of the largest medical colleges in the country offering the best of the services."

He added, “The GMCH’s most important department is the Mother and Child Hospital, which sees the highest number of patients and attendants and is widely discussed. I am confident that it will be comparable to the premier medical institutions of India. This new facility at GMCH will play a key role by taking excellent care of mothers and children. We are moving towards a healthier and brighter future.”
