GUWAHATI: Girls in the northeast, like their peers across the country, were all smiles on Monday after the CBSE Class XII results were declared. Pranjal Saikia, a CBSE regional office official, said, "The pass percentage of Guwahati zone is 70.91, which is 1.41 per cent higher than last year's 69.50 per cent. The pass percentage of boys is 69.30. The girls have beaten them with 72.90 per cent."
CBSE Guwahati zone comprises all eight northeastern states, including Sikkim.
1x1 polls
Navodaya Vidyalaya topped in the Guwahati zone with 96.19 per cent. Kendriya Vidyalaya schools came second with 93.37 per cent. The pass percentage of private schools in the zone was 76.26 per cent.
A total of 331 schools had registered for the exam held in 226 centres across the states. Since Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh do not have state boards, all schools, both private and government, are affiliated to CBSE.
The lower pass percentage in Guwahati zone was attributed to the poor performance of government schools in these two states. The overall pass percentage in Arunachal schools is just 60.29 per cent.
Most of the CBSE affiliated schools in the city fared well. Principal, Delhi Public School, Guwahati, Chandralekha Rawat, said, "Our students did really well and all 160 candidates passed the exam. The highest percentage was scored in science with 93.6 per cent and 94.8 per cent in Commerce. In humanities, the highest score was 94 per cent."
Director of Gems MPS International School, JN Das, said the performance of his students was very encouraging. "Seven students scored over 90 per cent, six in science and one in commerce. The number of students scoring 80 percent and above is 31," he said.

Maharshi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Barsajai, also came out with flying colours with all its 110 students clearing the exam. The school topper in science was Biswajit Sarma, who scored 95.2 per cent. The highest percentage in arts was 90.1 per cent while in commerce it was 92.4 per cent. Principal Panchali Roy said, "Being a principal I am happy but I hope we do even better next year."
South Point, one of the oldest schools in the city, also fared considerably well. Principal K Chanda said, "Our school was affiliated to CBSE a few years back but our students performed really well with 90 per cent. Two students scored 100 per cent in sociology.
