Silchar: Cachar police on Thursday arrested two more quacks posing as doctors, taking the total number of fake medical practitioners nabbed in the district to eight in the past fortnight.
The accused, identified as Nihar Hossain Mazarbhuia from Borkhola and Radheshyam Rabidas from Jirighat, were picked up in raids following complaints of fraudulent medical practices. Police said both were treating patients for years by producing fake MBBS degrees.
Mazarbhuia was arrested from a pharmacy in Borkhola, where officers also seized forged documents and certificates. According to investigators, he had been claiming to be a doctor using a bogus MBBS degree from a Bengaluru medical college. Rabidas, too, had allegedly been practising with a forged certificate for a long time before he was arrested from Jirighat.
A senior police officer said preliminary probe has revealed the involvement of two Silchar-based agencies that have been supplying fake medical degrees. “Investigation is on to unearth the full network. So far, we have arrested eight fake doctors from across the district,” he added.
Police said the crackdown against quacks will continue, terming the practice a “serious threat to public health and safety.”
