BJP’s ‘Mahila Akrosh’ rally in Guwahati today

Guwahati: BJP will hold a ‘Mahila Akrosh’ (Women’s Outrage) rally in Guwahati on Thursday to protest Congress and other opposition parties’ opposition to the “Nari Shakti Bandan Amendment Bill, 2026” in Parliament last Friday. The party said the rally aims to build public opinion for women’s participation and equal status in the democratic process.

BJP state spokesperson Devajit Mahanta said during the special session of Parliament held on April 16–17, Congress and other opposition parties opposed the bill seeking 33% reservation for women.



“This opposition to the bill has led to widespread anger among women across the nation against the insult and injustice inflicted upon them. The denial of rightful representation to women by the Congress has awakened women across the country, who are now raising their voices against this injustice,” Mahanta said.

He said the rally would also seek support for greater participation of women in the democratic process. “The 33 per cent reservation for women is neither a favor nor a concession, it is a rightful entitlement of women. The opposition by the Congress and the INDI alliance to the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill 2026, and their attempt to obstruct the political advancement of women, will not be forgotten by the women of this country. The anti-women mindset of the Congress has also emerged as a barrier to the nation’s development process,” he added.

Earlier, on April 19, BJP state president Dilip Saikia said the Congress’s opposition to the bill reflected apprehension toward women’s political empowerment. He also accused the party of raising regional concerns to stall the bill’s passage.
