BJP demands memorial for music icon Zubeen Garg in his hometown of Sribhumi
Silchar: Sribhumi district unit of BJP has demanded the construction of a memorial in Sribhumi — the childhood town of Assam’s music icon Zubeen Garg — to honour his enduring legacy.
At a condolence meeting organised at the party office on Sunday, leaders and workers paid floral tributes to the late singer and recalled his school days, his formative years in Sribhumi (then Karimganj), and his immense contribution to putting Assam on the global musical map.
District BJP president Sanjib Banik, former Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das and others highlighted that the spot where Zubeen once lived with his father — a govt magistrate’s quarter on Hatment Road in the Settlement area — would be the most fitting place for a memorial. They urged that the vacant land, where the quarter no longer exists, be used to build a “Zubeen Garg Smritishoudh” (memorial).
“The loss of Zubeen Garg is irreparable for the cultural world. Building a memorial at the site he once called home would be a lasting tribute to his artistry and his bond with this town,” a speaker said. The district BJP leadership also announced that it would take up the demand with the authorities concerned.
BJP workers had lit 52 lamps at the site, symbolising the singer’s age at the time of his untimely death. They also pressed for renaming the border town’s Hatment Road as “Zubeen Sarani”, and installing a bust of the singer there. Ward commissioner Barnali Dutta and city BJP mandal secretary Anupam Das Choudhury were among those who supported the proposal, calling it “just and logical.”
Party leaders and residents expressed hope that the demand would soon gain official approval, ensuring that Sribhumi preserves the memory of the music legend who spent his childhood in its embrace.
