GUWAHATI: Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector Badri Prasad Baruati, who was arrested by the city police for allegedly selling smuggled gold to a businessman on Tuesday, has been sent to two-day police remand by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Bharalu police arrested two employees of a jewellery shop in Nagaon who had purchased gold from the SI.
The accused have been identified as Manoj Shah and Aman
Ali. They were transporting the gold from Nagaon to Guwahati when a police team caught them and recovered gold worth Rs 50 lakh.
"Acting on a tip-off, we arrested Shah and Ali. On the basis of their statement, police picked up the SI on Tuesday and recovered Rs 8 lakh from his vehicle. A team of Guwahati police later raided the official residence of the SI and questioned his wife Bornali Bora, who is also a GRP SI stationed at Haibargaon, Nagaon. On searching the residence, the police recovered around Rs 4 lakh and a few grams of gold," MP Gupta, commissioner of police, Guwahati, said.
The police have also raided a jewellery shop in Nagaon in connection with the case and arrested the owner.
