Sarma: Don’t fall prey to cybercrime for easy money

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the people to be aware of growing cybercrimes in the state and not to fall prey to the cybercriminals for easy money.His statement has come in the backdrop of increasing cybercrimes in particular pockets of the state, including Morigaon.He told the media, “There are two aspects. One is people fall into the trap of the criminals unknowingly and lose money and the second is people lose money while going for easy money after being lured by the fraudsters. No one should think that making money is that easy.”Morigaon has become a hotspot in the country where maximum cybercrime takes place. Over 150 people were arrested last year in Morigaon with fake Indian documents, including Aadhaar and PAN and SIM cards, police said.Assam Police has taken various initiatives, including awareness through social media to prevent cybercrimes in the state. Assam Police has also dedicated a website, e-mail address and WhatsApp number to report cybercrimes. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, 1,733 cybercrime cases were reported in the state in 2022 which was 4,846 in 2021 and 3,530 in 2019. The chargesheet rate was only 14% in 2022. Personal revenge, fraud, extortion and anger were the prime motives behind the cybercrimes that took place in the state.Of the 1,733 cases, 592 were computer-related offences and 561 cases were related to publication or transmission of obscene or sexually explicit acts in electronic form.On the other hand, the conviction rate in cybercrimes cases in Assam is just over 4%, which is only above Goa, Gujarat and Uttarakhand, where the conviction rate is zero. Over 93% of cybercrime cases are pending at trial stage in different courts in Assam.
