GUWAHATI: The BJP-led
Assam cabinet
on Saturday approved purchase of 8,000
wheelchairs
by the state government to help the divyang voters and those with reduced mobility to cast their votes in the coming assembly elections.
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, state industry and commerce minister
Chandramohan Patowary
said, “The state government will purchase these 8,000 wheelchairs immediately so that they can be put to use to help those voters or even polling officials who need them. This purchase will be purely for election purpose and after the election these wheelchairs will be used by various departments.”
Election Commission has listed 21 disabilities as mentioned by the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities Act 2016
are termed as voters with disabilities to identify a PwD (person with disability) voter. In addition, if a person who has reduced mobility and/or motor function and/or physical coordination due to age, temporary ailment, pregnancy and other disease, and needs to be facilitated to get registered and to vote are termed as electors / voters with reduced mobility and physical functions.
