Assam BJP slams West Bengal govt over Prez’s Santhal conclave visit
Guwahati: Assam Pradesh BJP on Sunday criticised the West Bengal govt for allegedly ‘insulting the President’ by changing the venue of the recent international Santhal conclave at the last minute, which she was scheduled to attend.
BJP state spokesperson Mita N Bora said disrespect to the President was a disrespect towards India’s democracy. “BJP expresses deep concern over the developments surrounding the President’s recent visit to West Bengal on Mar 7 to attend the 9th International Santhal conclave,” Bora said.
The spokesperson said that equally concerning was the reported breach of established protocol during the President’s visit. “As per long-standing constitutional conventions, when the President visits a state, the CM or senior representatives of the state govt formally receive the President. In this instance, no senior leadership from the state was present to receive her,” Bora said.
She added that the conference was an important platform, which brought together members of the Santhal community and representatives from different regions, to deliberate on issues related to tribal welfare, cultural preservation and the future aspirations of the community. “The Santhal community is one of the largest tribal communities in India, with more than 7 million people across the country and over 2.5 million residing in West Bengal,” Bora said.
Condemning the manner in which the visit of the President was handled by the West Bengal govt, led by Mamata Banerjee, Bora said, “The incident becomes even more unfortunate as it occurred just ahead of the International Women’s Day, a day that celebrates the achievements, dignity and empowerment of women. The President is not only the constitutional head of the nation, but also the first tribal woman to occupy this highest office, representing the aspirations and pride of millions of people across the country.”
Bora reiterated that the dignity of constitutional offices and the principles of democratic conduct must be respected always and any action that undermines these values must be addressed with seriousness.
