GUWAHATI: A total of 67 out of 74 accused ACS and APS officers and
Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) employees, which include former chairperson Rakesh Paul, will face trial in the cash-for-job scam as the court of special judges, Assam, framed charges against them on Tuesday.
The court discharged two accused - Sailendra Kr Sarmah Baruah - who is an advocate by profession, and Surajit Choudhury, who is a businessman, after observing that there is no sufficient ground to proceed against them.
No charges have been framed against three approvers - Avishikha Baruah, Sanjan Phukan and Debabrata Dey. The then chairperson Rakesh Paul and two APSC employees - Samedur Rahman and Basanta Kumar Doley - have been booked under various charges, including criminal conspiracy and forgery.
A case was registered at Dibrugarh police station in 2016 with an allegation that one accused, Naba Kumar Patir, contacted the complainant and asked her to pay him Rs 10,00,000 to recruit her as a dental surgeon after the exam conducted by APSC. Police, in the course of the probe, arrested 74 officers, which include APSC employees, ACS and APS officers, at different times and the cash-for-job scam came to light.
