GUWAHATI: The BJP in Assam has welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the Centre's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution which conferred special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Assam CM and North East Democratic Alliance convener Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the "the Supreme Court judgment has cemented the long held unifying principle of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat." "This verdict has put to rest mischievous propaganda and disinformation since the last three years. It is my earnest appeal that all sections of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh society unite in fulfilling the Prime Minister's vision of progress and prosperity in the region," he wrote in a post on X.
On the other hand, former chief minister and present Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, while welcoming the verdict of the apex court, stated that "Jammu & Kashmir was always an integral part of India and for decades remained disturbed due to wrong policies and ill intent".
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi created history by removing Article 370, giving wings to the dreams of new India and bringing never seen before development to the 'Paradise on Earth'. Today, J&K stands tall as our crowning jewel, with its people finding peace, progress, prosperity and aspirations for a better and united future," he added.
BJP's Assam president Bhabesh Kalita said the verdict signals hope, progress and unity for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress in Assam has also categorically welcomed the verdict of the apex court.
